Starting a blog rewarding experience get to share your ideas with the world, build an audience, and even earn money from your writing. However, writing for the web is a form of writing. They are style, tone, length, and formatting need to be adapted for the online medium. 

Choose a compelling topic 

The first step is deciding on a topic for your blog. Pick a niche that you’re passionate about, knowledgeable in, and an interested audience. Does keyword research to increase demand for your chosen subject. Your blog’s focus is clear from the start. Unlike other formats, writing for blogs has a conversational, approachable tone. Write as if you’re speaking to a friend. However, avoid using slang or come across as unprofessional. Find a balance between casual and still authoritative.

Write killer headlines  

Use emotional trigger words like “How To,” “Why,” “Best,” “Never,” etc. Ask thought-provoking questions or readers with clear benefits. Include targeted keywords but avoid keyword stuffing. Keep headlines short but compelling. Carefully craft your headlines for maximum impact.

Open with a bang

The opening hook is critical for pulling readers in so start posts with a powerful first sentence. Entertain and readers by telling compelling stories. Incorporate relevant keywords in headings, URLs, meta descriptions, alt text, etc. Do keyword research to find terms people search for. Create evergreen, in-depth content on topics that lack online information. Interlink related content. Promote your posts on social media.

Check readability

Strive for clear, concise writing that is easy to comprehend. Use the Hemingway App or other checkers to assess sentence length, word complexity, passive voice, etc. The internet favors simple language. Avoid jargon and vary sentence structure. Edit ruthlessly to tighten wording. Reading your content helps spot convoluted phrasing.

Format content well 

Break up content with whitespace by using short paragraphs, subheadings, bolded text, images, block quotes, etc. Justify text alignment for reading flow. Populate meta descriptions, alt text, captions, etc. Clean formatting engagement and quality. Back up claims by citing credible third-party sources with links. However, don’t over-rely on outside sources. Cite judiciously and sure quotes complement your original analysis. Failing to cite sources constitutes plagiarism so credit all references properly.

Proofread thoroughly

Typos and grammar errors undermine your credibility as a writer. Consistently proofread articles before publishing. Use Grammarly or Hemingway Editor to catch mistakes. Ask someone else to review your post with fresh eyes. Refine and tighten text through multiple drafts. Polish thoroughly for a professional result.

Promote content

Driving traffic to your blog takes consistent promotion. Share new posts on social media and link back to trending content when relevant. Pitch guest posting opportunities to increase reach. Build relationships with other bloggers collaborations, comments, and sharing content. Leverage email newsletters and social ads to get found.
